Role purpose :
- Initiates, directs and executes scientific research and/or development strategies to create profitable products in Romaine Lettuce
Accountabilities: :
- Research and/or develop genetic testing, analysis, and evaluation.
- Develop program strategy and participate in achieving strategies.
- Develop and coordinate the inbred line development.
- Coordinate screening and development of lines and end products.
- Develop, conduct and evaluate tolerance for species at seedling stage of growth.
- Develop, conduct and evaluate disease screening activities.
- Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems in the enhancement of Syngenta's product offering and intellectual property position.
- Develop and secure intellectual property.
- Develop strategic IP plans
- Create innovative products via input and output traits not currently found in or at low or limited frequency in present breeding programs or in the marketplace.
- Develop and maintain excellent internal and external customer relationships.
- Serve as in-house consultant.
- Act as spokesperson on corporate research and development.
- Develop new relationships with downstream stakeholders.
- Maintain strong relationships with internal personnel.
- Develop and manage program personnel and budget
Knowledge, Skills &
Experience:
Critical knowledge: :
- Uses professional concepts in accordance with company objectives to solve complex problems in creative and effective ways.
- Demonstrates success in technical proficiency, scientific creatively, collaboration with others and independent thoughts. Works on complex problems in which analysis of situation or date requires an in- depth evaluation of various factors. - May determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may provide guidance or supervision non-exempt or professional personnel.
Critical Experience :
- PhD preferred with 5-8 years related experience.
- MS degree with 8-10 years related experience.
- Knowledge of plant breeding, biotechnology, statistics and agriculture.
- Knowledge of plant pathology.
- Management experience

Working Conditions While Performing Essential Functions :
Conditions are often dirty, dusty, and hot in combination with noisy equipment. Potential allergens-pollen, fungal spores, chemical pesticides in field or greenhouse. Exposure to high and low temperatures, sun, rain, and dust.
Significant domestic and international travel throughout key markets required.
