The Project: Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP)
The Bechtel team is responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of the world's largest and most technically sophisticated radioactive waste treatment plant (WTP) at the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site in Washington State. This first-of-a-kind project will use vitrification to transform 53 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste into and immobile glass form. The waste is stored in 177 aging underground tanks accumulated between 1944 and 1989, when plutonium and other nuclear materials were produced for national defense. The plant will include three major nuclear process facilities and a laboratory: a Pretreatment Facility, a High-Level Waste Vitrification Facility, a Low-Activity Waste Vitrification Facility, and an Analytical Laboratory.
WTP Project Vessel Engineer Scope
You will be working as part of the engineering Vessel Group designing and analyzing complex mechanical equipment, including process vessels, designed to ASME Section VIII, for the WTP process facilities. You will be preparing design documentation, performing calculations using engineering software, and preparing specifications for complex mechanical equipment used in the waste treatment process and support systems. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in using vessel design software such as Compress and finite element analysis ((FEA) software such as ANSYS and will be capable of developing design documents, including specifications and datasheets, that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design.
Vessel Engineer Job Details
The primary role of the vessel engineer is to collect the process, mechanical, controls, safety, and other requirements for the process equipment, including vessels, and develop design documents and calculations for the equipment to meet the applicable requirements. The vessel engineer administers the production of the equipment material requisitions and drawings. The vessel engineer coordinates within the engineering group and other disciplines in developing the detailed equipment design in a team environment. The vessel engineer supports resolution of technical issues related to the discipline, and discusses them with other disciplines, groups, suppliers, and the customer. The vessel engineer prepares reports and studies in resolving open technical issues related to the equipment design. The vessel engineer performs equipment stress analyses using FEA software as well as performs reviews of FEA and other submittals prepared by equipment vendors. The vessel engineer supports development of the cost estimate and schedule for the mechanical equipment. The vessel engineer assures the work is performed to the high quality standards for nuclear facilities while executing to the schedule. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills and can be the face of Bechtel promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values to external partners, including vendors, construction companies, and other subcontractors.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
Basic Qualifications
BS in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree with 1 year of related experience. Related experience includes, but is not limited to, the design and fabrication of complex processing vessels
Knowledge of ASME and API vessel codes and standards associated with fabrication and construction of pressure vessel equipment
Hands on experience using vessel design software such as Compress and FEA analysis software such as ANSYS.
Experience in working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000.
Must have or be capable of obtaining a U.S. Professional Engineering License or EIT not later than December 31, 2014.
Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards
Preferred Qualifications
Professional registration or EIT
Experience using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software
Experience in equipment design analysis in DOE or commercial nuclear facilities.
Possess the legal right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship
