Ethicon, a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is currently recruiting for a Group Director, R&D;, Applied Science and Technology (AST) to be located in Somerville, New Jersey.
The Ethicon business offers a broad range of products, platforms and technologies-including sutures, hemostasis products, surgical staplers, trocars and synthetic mesh devices-that are used in a wide variety of open and minimally invasive surgical procedures. Specialties include support for treatment of colorectal and thoracic conditions, women's health conditions, hernias, cancer and obesity. The Ethicon business combines products and services of two market leading legacy companies, both with long histories of medical innovation. Ethicon, Inc. based in Somerville, New Jersey, was founded more than 80 years ago as a pioneer in suture development and manufacturing, helping to transform the safety and effectiveness of surgery.
The Group Director, Applied Science & Technology (AST) will have overall responsibility for the 5 Science & Technology groups in R&D;: Analytical Characterization, Product Stability, Performance Evaluation, Product Microbiology and Sterilization Science & Technology.
The Group Director will develop and lead strategic initiatives for R&D; in support of the long-term goals of the Global Surgery Group and have responsibility for talent and organization development. Primary ownership areas include capability building, human resource deployment, development of evidence, supporting the discovery, planning, and development of new products, product life-cycle-management and compliance.
The Group Director will develop and sustain critical scientific capability and capacity in each functional group of AST. The Group Director will provide technical and organizational leadership to ensure new product discovery and development priority programs are fully supported and milestones are achieved. This position will partner with each R&D; business unit platform to effectively execute new product development and product lifecycle management projects including line extensions, product transfers, component and finished-good product changes, and compliance with existing and emerging regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or related field is required. An MS or Ph.D. is highly preferred. A minimum of ten to twelve (10-12) years professional experience in an applied R&D; environment is required. Experience and expertise in one of the scientific fields of primary focus for AS&T; (sterilization science, microbiology, analytical chemistry, physical testing - performance evaluation) is required. Familiarity with regulations and requirements for the development of implantable medical devices is highly preferred. Experience in medical device design and development is strongly preferred.
Candidates must possess a demonstrated track record of leading cross functional teams, with a proven ability to work in a matrix environment, achieving successful support to cross-functional product and project management. Experience driving high performing cross-functional and indirect teams that delivers results is required. In addition, strong partnering, influence management, and communication skills are required. Track record with supervision of direct reports for superior performance to achieve business goals and for career development required.
The proven ability to foster a productive team-oriented environment, handle multiple assignments, and display flexibility in response to an environment with rapidly shifting priorities is strongly desired. Well developed problem solving skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to listen, learn, teach, and think strategically are traits that are required for long term success in this role.
This position is based in Ethicon, Somerville (NJ) and may require up to 25% (primarily domestic) travel as business needs arise.
