Ethicon, a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is currently recruiting for an Assistant Engineer to be located in Somerville, New Jersey.
The Ethicon business offers a broad range of products, platforms and technologies-including sutures, surgical staplers, clip appliers, trocars and synthetic mesh devices-that are used in a wide variety of minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. Specialties include support for treatment of colorectal and thoracic conditions, women's health conditions, hernias, cancer and obesity. The Global Surgery Innovation organization supports all business technologies under Global Surgery, including Wound Closure/Hernia/Gynecare, MIP, Biosurgery, Energy, Acclarent, Mentor, Cardio Vascular, BWI and Sterilmed. Global Surgery Innovation functions include Business Unit R&D;, Regulatory, and Clinical and Medical Affairs
The Assistant Engineer will be responsible for contributing to cross-functional / multidisciplinary project teams (R&D;, manufacturing, marketing, regulatory, etc.) in the design, development, and manufacturing of the surgical sutures, surgical devices, and related products and processes. The Assistant Engineer will conduct research toward new product or process development or development efforts toward improvement of existing products or process. The individual in this position will contribute inventions, new designs, new processes and techniques to solve technical problems based on customer needs. This position will interact directly with customers (surgeons) to determine and identify unmet needs and work towards producing products to support these conditions. The individual in this position must be a creative, hands-on engineer needed to design and develop new medical devices from concept through product launch.
The Assistant Engineer will need to have the ability to incorporate manufacturability into new product development and interact with manufacturing to scale up R&D; prototype processes to manufacturing capacity. This role will frequently interact with outside vendors and academia to bring state of the art technologies, techniques, processes, and equipment in-house for new product development. Additionally, this position will provide technical support to manufacturing and marketing, and the incumbent must have the capability to handle multiple projects and tasks, simultaneously.
Qualifications
A minimum of a High School diploma is required. A BS degree in Polymer Science and/or Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or allied field is preferred. Minimum of 5 years of experience in an industrial environment as a technical contributor in developing polymer processes and polymer/plastic products is required Adept, hands-on experimentalist with prior experience handling and processing polymers is required. Preferred areas of polymer processing expertise include polymer compounding, film extrusion, fiber spinning, injection-molding & associated down-stream processes of amorphous and semi-crystalline resins. Experience working with bio-absorbable polymers is highly desirable. Experience with pneumatics, hydraulics and electrical equipment as well as PLC controllers desired. Experience in medical devices product/process development and incorporating manufacturability into the new product development is preferred. Knowledge of Design/Process Excellence (Six Sigma) is preferred.
The ability to work in a team-oriented environment that embraces change, risk, and flexibility is needed. This individual must be capable of handling multiple projects/tasks at the same time. A demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team with sense of urgency against timelines is needed. Demonstrated ability to listen to customers' needs, develop solutions to meet their requirements, trust and respect is needed. Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new technical skills is required. Must be an hands-on engineer, and be willing and able to do hands on lab work. Prior demonstrated mechanical experience (i.e. trouble shooting and fixing equipment) preferred. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. A passion and enthusiasm for innovation will be an asset. Proven problem solving skills and good interpersonal relationship and people skills will be needed.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
