We are currently searching for a Regional Safety Manager to be based at our Arlington, VA Corporate Headquarters and oversee safety for our Mid-Atlantic region.
The Regional Safety Manager will report into the Senior Director of National Safety and Health and work with the Regional Construction Director, Project Managers, Project Superintendents, and any third party safety consultants retained by AvalonBay in support of AvalonBay, municipal, state and federal safety and health regulations.
This role serves as the Regional-level contact for safety and health matters. The Regional Safety Manager will be required to provide safety support to multiple construction projects in various stages of completion to identify, manage and control hazardous conditions that may lead to injury and or property damage and to support an incident and injury free project environment.
Responsibilities:
Enforce safe work practices, safe working conditions and compliance with all municipal, state and federal safety and health regulations. Recommend corrective action(s) for non-compliant or any unsafe conditions
Stop Work when conditions or circumstances are related to an immediate danger to life and health condition (IDLH) on a project. Direct AvalonBay and contractor staff to immediately correct IDLH conditions
Investigate safety and health issues, including incidents involving injury or property damage on behalf of AvalonBay
Communicate with project staff and subcontractors in connection with resolving project safety and health issues and supporting an incident and injury free environment
Provide safety and health leadership to projects within assigned region. Build working relationships with project staff and Subcontractors to support an injury free workplace
Provide mentoring and education for AvalonBay Safety Liaison (as applicable)
Educate project staff on AvalonBay Construction Safety policies and procedures. Conduct training on AvalonBay safety and health programs as well as general construction safety topics as necessary to ensure project staff can recognize existing hazards
Provide project-level safety and health performance metrics
Conduct and document project-wide safety and health inspections of assigned projects at least daily when work is in progress. This includes safety and health inspections required by municipal regulations
Makes notifications to National Safety and Health Director and Regional Construction Director as required
Assist the National Safety and Health Director in overall program improvement, implementation and expansion as directed. Completes other duties as assigned
This person will oversee the implementation of Construction Project Safety and Health Plans for projects with the assigned region, ensures subcontractor compliance with AvalonBay policies, applicable safety and health regulations. Responsibilities include:
Develop (and maintain current) the Construction Project Safety and Health Plan for the assigned project(s)
Lead safety training for AvalonBay construction personnel. Assist project team(s) with weekly contractor and internal project safety meetings
Analyze regional observation and injury data for trends. Make recommendations for improvement(s)
Review contractor safety and health submittals. Provide recommendations to improve contractor's written safety and health documents
Conduct safety and health inspections, issue report of compliant/non-compliant conditions. Track corrective action(s) by contractors to completion
Investigate and report incident claims to AvalonBay Risk Management

Qualifications: A four year degree in Safety and Health or equivalent is preferred with at least seven (7) years of safety experience. Candidates must be able to demonstrate knowledge of safety and health principles including the ability to identify known potential exposures and recommended corrective actions. This person needs strong computer skills including Microsoft office suite. This person will need strong management and communication skills (Verbal and written). This person will need to have working knowledge of OSHA Construction Safety and Health regulations, national consensus standards as well as municipal and state regulations. Certifications such as Associate Safety Professional (ASP ), Certified Safety Professional (CSP ), Construction Health and Safety Technologist (CHST ) are desired. This person should also have current municipal and/or state licenses necessary to work in locations where such are required. Prior experience with an incident and injury free, zero accident or similar behavioral based safety programs is a plus.
Physical Demands: Performance of the required duties will require physical ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs, passenger use of construction personnel hoists, ability to climb ladders and negotiate work areas under construction. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Performing this job requires use of hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls. Able to sit, talk and hear, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) up to and including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, protective footwear, vest and respiratory protection is essential.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the Regional Safety Manager regularly visits construction work site where there is potential exposure to moving mechanical parts; high places; dust, mist, fumes or airborne particles; external weather conditions. The noise in these work environments is usually moderate to very loud. Frequent travel to/from projects sites across a geographic area is expected.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
