Your Duties:
The primary responsibility of the Field Technician will be to conduct one or more types of wildlife surveys at an operational wind project. The position requires conducting daily searches for injured or dead birds and bats under operational wind turbines. Other surveys may include acoustic bat detector surveys and documentation of wildlife-turbine interactions. Keen observation skills are required and bird and bat identification skills are preferred. This position works both independently and as part of a larger survey team. The Field Intern will be based in the vicinity of an operational wind project and will maintain regular communication with a Project Manager in the Topsham, Maine Stantec office. Most projects are in the Northeast, however projects may occur in the Mid-Atlantic or elsewhere. Fieldwork occurs from April to November at most projects.
The Field Technician position is a great entry-level position for someone looking for a career in environmental science or wildlife biology.
1. Drive to a data collection site in late afternoon, refuel tank and start the generator,
2. Set a nightly file for recorded data.
3. Make sure everything's in order and operating.
4. Collect contents of bug trap on a weekly basis and record date.
5. It's about 1 - 2 hours a week on site; 5 nights per week.
6. There'll also likely be an occasional need to check on the acoustic bat detectors that are in the towers (units are lowered to the ground - no climbing).
7. Stantec will provide all the training.
8. Be able to follow directions,
9. Be respectful of landowner issues (close fences when you open, etc.),
10. Call if/when there are any issues or questions.
11. Support additional activities as needed (habitat surveys, safety oversight for subs)
Your Capabilities and Credentials:
Successful candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, or related field, and a strong interest in wildlife biology.
Superb observation skills are highly valued, as are a strong interest in the natural world
Comfort with computers and technology
Willingness to learn new skills while conducting fieldwork in rural or wilderness settings, flexibility in undertaking work assignments
Strong work ethic, excellent communication skills, ability to follow directions, and a positive attitude.
Bird and bat identification skills, particularly of raptor species, are preferred
Willingness to travel and work independently for long hours in the field is necessary
Must be in good physical condition and should have a reliable personal vehicle
Boots, camera, binoculars, and bird identification guides will be needed
