The SecondOperator is critical to the efficient operation of a printing press. He/she is responsible for an accurate make-ready, production of a quality product at acceptable speed and delivery to shipping of the proper amount of product properly jogged and skidded. This position is responsible for the direction of the press crew (roll-tender, and stackers) in the absence or direction of the First Operator. This position is second to the FirstOperator in assuring the delivery of a quality product. It is the incumbent s specific responsibility to maintain adequate supplies at the press to minimize downtime during such activities as plate changes, washing blankets, etc. The incumbent must have sufficient experience and knowledge to practice good preventive maintenance of the press; identify and trouble-shoot press problems. Incumbent may also be assigned other tasks from time to time.

Required Skills
MUST have a detailed understanding of the printing process including plate making, roll-tending, paper grades, printing chemistry, and shipping process.
MUST have extensive experience in the operation of web presses, preferably in an insert printing environment. Incumbent should have good interpersonal skills and ability to work with his/her crew effectively.
MUST have ability to prepare and understand basic production reports in the absence of the Press Supervisor.
MUST have the ability to comprehend and implement basic understanding of company policies and procedures regarding quality, and production standards.
MUST be capable of standing on feet for amounts of time with limited opportunity to leave general work area. Work shifts are (12) hours in duration. TheOperator will be required to remain in the press area when the press is running or if preventative maintenance is being performed by the crew. The exception to this is thirty-minute lunch break, plus break periods during the shift when the press is covered by the other members of the department.
MUST be able to lift excessive weight as well as have full range of motion of the back in order to bend at the waist or to reach above the head. During a normal press run or during times of normal routine maintenance of the equipment both lifting and bending are part of the standard process of producing an order.
MUST be capable of supporting the FirstOperator in the training other crew members in the proper methods of operating the presses.
MUST comply with safety rules; 75lb steel toe work shoes or boots with oil-resistant Soles &all other PPE.
MUST be able to communicate and to respond to communication in a manufacturing environment. The pressroom is noisy and all plant employees are required to use hearing protection devices which are designed to muffle outside noises.As one of the leaders of the crews, theSecondOperatoris expected to maintain the image the position carries and lead through example.
