Summary
The Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy (ALETA) Training Instructor is responsible for instructing basic and advanced students in the principles and techniques of law enforcement. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Typical Functions
Delivers lectures and make other classroom presentations to basic and advanced law enforcement academy students, in such subjects as the Arkansas Juvenile Code, crime prevention and patrol concepts, use of non-deadly force, occupational stress, vehicle and building search techniques, and variety of other related subjects. Instructs students in fire-arms use and safety on the firing range by demonstrating proper techniques and observing students in practice and firing, for qualifications, and takes immediate action in case of safety violations or malfunctions. Instructs students in defensive tactics, physical fitness, baton use, vehicle search, and other subjects by demonstration in the field. Researches changes to state and federal laws, reviews educational materials, and develops and updates lesson plans, classroom teaching aids, and testing materials, administers and grades tests, and maintains and updates student records. Assigns students to rooms, sets up classrooms, and explains rules and regulations to incoming basic students, inspects house-keeping completed by students, and takes necessary corrective action. Performs other duties as assigned.
Special Job Dimensions
Occasional in-state travel and frequent work during other than normal working hours is required. May be exposed to personal injury when conducting self-defense training and firearms training.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of principles, practices, techniques of law enforcement, and the criminal justice system. Knowledge of principles of hand-to-hand combat, self-defense, and the use of firearms. Ability to instruct and demonstrate techniques in self-defense and the use of firearms. Ability to develop and use a variety of training aids and make presentations, to include development and use of lesson plans and related research. Ability to direct the work of inmates and maintain security. Ability to communicate in both oral and written modes.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, or related field; plus three years of experience in law enforcement or a related area.
Preferred Qualifications
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Certified Law Enforcement Officer by the Arkansas Law Enforcement Standards and Training as established by Arkansas Code 12-9-204.
Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
