Gerdau is currently hiring for Research and Development Engineers/Technical Specialists for our Jackson, MI Headquarters.

Position Overview:
The R&D Engineer/Technical Specialist is part of the Research and Development team. The Specialist reports directly to the Manager of Research & Development. The individual will have no direct reports but will be required to work collaboratively with others within and outside the business unit. The individual will have expertise in a specific aspect of SBQ production including but not limited to melt & cast, rolling, finishing, testing or product. The individual is responsible for the planning, coordination, execution and monitoring of R&D projects. These projects will be part of a portfolio of projects designed to meet the strategic goals of the business division. The Technical Specialist will serve as the technical reference and will provide support to the steel manufacturing operations and other functions within the organization. The individual is responsible for building strong relationships with other stake holders, including but not limited to, other Gerdau business units, customers, academia and technical organizations.

Responsibilities:
Follow safe practices and promote safety among members of the R&D team and the organization as a whole
Adopt and promote Gerdau values among members of the R&D team and the organization as a whole
Participate in the development and the implementation of R&D strategy for GSN
Assist in the development of a balanced portfolio of projects that supports the Strategic Business Plan (PEX) of the business unit
Lead the execution of the prioritized projects using project management tools to ensure the expected returns, quality and the on-time completion of projects. Methodology and statistical tools should be used to ensure success of the project.
Provide technical support to the steel mills and other functions of the organization
Interact with customers to resolve technical issues and to promote the technical capabilities of Gerdau
Implement practices as defined in the GSS R&D management blue print. These practices include but are not limited to Technology Road mapping (TRM), Ideation and Radar
Promote innovation within the organization and implement innovative solutions and improvements
Continuously monitor the external environment to identify technological, product and market trends. Disseminate this information to the organization.
Participate in and support Engineering teams in development of technical studies for Capex projects
Adhere to project specific and departmental budgets
Promote the establishment of relationships with Universities and other Technological Institutions, through participation in conferences, joint projects, student mentoring, etc.
Promote the technological capabilities of Gerdau, through the publication and presentation of technical papers and news articles

Requirements:
Degree in Engineering is required, preferably in Metallurgy or Material Science (other related fields of engineering study will be considered - ex. chemical engineering)

years' relevant experience in the steel industry, with technical expertise in a specific aspect of SBQ production including but not limited to melt & cast, rolling, finishing, testing or product. Prior R&D experience is a plus
Incumbent must be flexible to travel to other mill locations during project implementations
Should be well recognized within the technical community as an individual with proven track record of technological innovation
Strong analytical and problem solving skills using statistical techniques
Understand customer needs and show ability to create value for internal and external customers
Proven track record of executing successful projects through effective project management
Ability to work in teams, with the skills to achieve goals through influence. Experience of working in culturally diverse teams is a plus
Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others.
Willingness and ability to travel and actively participate in projects at manufacturing locations.
