Substance Abuse Specialist I Nature Of Work
This is an entry level position within the county's substance abuse program. Work involves responsibility for assessing and counseling clients and families. Work also involves related responsibilities, including
maintaining client records, evaluation and assessment, individual and group counseling, conducting didactic and educational groups and meeting with community groups to inform them of treatment programs. Employees in this class must have a good understanding of the dynamics and problems of addiction and abuse, and exercise judgment, rapport and skill in their interaction and communication with clients. General and clinical supervision is received from a supervisor who directs and manages treatment services.
Substance Abuse Specialist I Illustrative Tasks
Conducts comprehensive psycho-social assessments.
Maintains clients' records; counsels individual and groups concerning addiction and recovery.
Participates in group discussions and seminars.
Informs local government and social agencies such as parole, welfare agencies, hospitals or police
regarding available resources for treatment; meets with local community groups such as churches,
schools and business organizations to inform them of county substance abuse programs.
Submits written reports on the quality/quantity of work completed.
Performs case management functions.
Substance Abuse Specialist I Knowledge. Abilities and Skills
Knowledge of the dynamics and problems and addiction, abuse and treatment methods.
Knowledge of psychology counseling theory and practice with the ability to apply to substance abuse.
Knowledge of laws, developments and literature in the field of addiction.
Knowledge of local public and private alcohol and drug programs and their requirements, and the
available community resources helpful to clients.
Knowledge of community services provided by community public health agencies and hospitals.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter
and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers,
elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless
of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
Ability to counsel effectively with addicted client and families.
Ability to relate goals and methods of substance abuse treatment to community groups and agencies.
Ability to prepare and submit narrative and statistical reports.
If you have a Bachelors Degree in Counselor or Behavioral Health Related Field, You must present a CAP certification. If you do not
have CAP certification you must present a Masters degree.
Salary $15/hr.
Shift M-F 8a-5pm.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
