## _SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION
_
The Relay Engineer designs, coordinates, and implements protective relay and supervisory control systems for the safe and reliable operation of electric transmission, distribution and generation facilities.
_DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS_

Must understand electric theory and control wiring
Excellent organizational skills for proper work flow documentation
Engineer will develop and maintain necessary documentation to comply with NERC Standards
Engineer will interrogate system events to determine protective relay performance using computers, disturbance monitoring, and other methods and recommend solutions to enhance power system reliability
Develop protective relaying standards for Transmission interconnection and distribution projects
Engineer will work with RTU's (remote terminal units) and PLC's (programmable logic controllers) and other communication equipment to interact with protective relays, meters, and other control devices for remote control and data acquisition
Perform fault studies, conduct fault tests, and evaluate test reports to validate system operation and performance.
Provide on-site technical assistance as needed for construction, modification, commissioning, testing and maintenance of protective relay equipment
Support substation operations in investigating relay alarms and protective relay operations through interrogation of specific devices and analysis of existing control prints, and investigation with testing equipment
Assist relay technicians with commissioning new equipment, completing relay testing, and troubleshooting existing systems
Research new technology and products for improving safety, efficiency, and reliability of transmission and distribution systems, providing detailed reports and recommendations for specific equipment. This may require research and development in relay lab or with existing field equipment
Effective communication with other departments and work groups
Conduct pre-job tailboard, periodic field visits, and post job review with internal and external construction crews on projects
Complete peer review of other engineer's projects as part of the engineering work flow
Creative and Innovative design and problem solving
Serve in a capacity as project manager to insure scope of work, budget, and schedules are met for construction and maintenance activities
Support project managers with specific engineering assignments to include engineering, detailed scope of work, schedule, budget, and capital forecasts
Lead and participate in project scoping meetings with multiple departments to find mutually beneficial solutions for all company, and project initiatives, developing scope of work, schedule, and budget for capital budget items
Complete engineering design on schedule as laid out in the department engineering work schedule
Active participation in promoting a leading edge safety culture
Promote a spirit of teamwork within the department and with other departments to achieve the objectives necessary for optimum reliability
Integrate departmental procedures and practices into the integrated corporate enterprise system
Promote safety by identifying critical steps and helping establish defenses in workflows
Majority of Job is performed in an office environment mostly sitting, with occasional lifting of office materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Field visits and technical assistance may expose the worker to extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
_GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
_
Must be able to demonstrate a good safety record
Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills
BS in electrical engineering, or other related field
Excellent computer skills
A strong understanding of electric power systems, electric circuit analysis techniques and a general understanding of microprocessor based equipment and logic design is desirable
Must be able to work closely with other individuals and cooperate with other departments
Good communication, analytical, organizational, and planning skills are required
Good working knowledge of the NESC, NERC and WECC Guidelines preferred but not required
Professional Engineering license or ability to obtain within four years is preferred
Experience with Autocad preferred
