The Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional nurse who is directly responsible to the Nurse Manager. He/she will be assigned to the Henatology/Oncology Clinic and Infusion Clinic within Specialty Clinics and may be assigned to other units at the Gulf Coast Veteran Health Care System as needed.
The Staff Nurse will be responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care and evaluates care based on age-specific components.He/she assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction.The Staff Nurse will administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.He/she influences care outcomes by collaborating with memebers of the interdisciplinary elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs.
PREFERRED CHARACTERISTICS/
Experience:
In addition to the basic qualification requirements, applicants must have demonstrated evidence of the following preferred characteristics/experience determined to be essential for satisfactory performance in the position.
1. A minimum of 3 years of recent RN experience is required.
2.Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Provider Card preferred.
3.One year Adult Oncology & infusion experience required.
4.BLS certification preferred.
5.Excellent clinical skills along with the ability to work effectively with
multidisciplinary team members .
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.
The criteria are as follows:

Professional Development: performance, education/career development;
Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality;
Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

Physical Requirements: Registered Nurse Functional Requirements: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy Carrying (45 lbs and over); Pushing and pulling (up to 4 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Both hands required; Walking (up to 4 hours); Standing (up to 4 hours); Kneeling (up to 5 hours); Repeated bending (up to 2 hours); Near vision correctable at 13 to 16 to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Hearing (aid permitted) and Emotional and Mental Stability.
