Whirlpool Properties manages over 5000 trademark registrations that we license to our related Whirlpool companies and to independent third parties. We own a portfolio of marks that include KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Maytag, Jenn-Air and Amana.
Our staff includes two attorneys, four paralegals and an administrative assistant. We are a tightly knit group that enjoys working together in a collegial environment. Our largest licensee is Whirlpool Corporation, our parent company, which has its headquarters two miles from our office. We interact with the management and staff of Whirlpool Corporation on a daily basis.
We are located 90 miles from downtown Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan in Saint Joseph, Michigan. Brief Overview of the Position
You will be a member of a fun and engaged team of paralegals that administer our trademark registrations. As the lead paralegal for a portfolio of foreign trademarks you will operate with a high level of independence and accountability.
In this position, you'll have the opportunity to:
Administer and maintain a docket of trademark filings and other deadlines. Ensure all correspondence, registration and renewal certificates and invoices are properly entered into the system. Be accountable for the security and reliability of all due dates and making certain that no dates are missed.
Conduct clearance searches; work with attorneys to complete final search opinions.
Work directly with in-country counsel on the filing and prosecution of foreign trademark applications.
Police and protect the companys intellectual property, including review of watch notices and other information. Interface directly with foreign counsel on enforcement matters.
Provide prompt and thorough document collection and organization for foreign trademark litigation.
Review and audit trademark usage in advertising, packaging, Use & Care guides and other print and electronic media.
Track and maintain global domain names.
Conduct training for marketing staff and ad agencies relating to the proper uses of the trademarks.
Conduct legal and other research.
What you need to succeed in this position:
At least 4 years worldwide trademark docket management, prosecution and enforcement experience with a large corporate law department or law firm required.
A 4 year college degree (an ABA approved paralegal certificate may be acceptable).
Familiarity with WebTMS desirable or another trademark docketing database.
Highly organized and detailed oriented with ability to ensure that deadlines are properly tracked and met.
Strong analytical skills along with the ability to reach creative solutions.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to multi-task.
A passion for trademarks and a good sense of humor.
