This is a full-time TERM position Not-to-Exceed 13 Months, but MAY be extended up to 4 years at management's discretion.

The employee will serve as a Biological Science Technician (Invasive Species/Restoration) at the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Roswell, NM. As such, the employee is vital to plan, implement and monitor invasive species occurrence on the Refuge and assist with Refuge Restoration projects.

Assists in the planning and conducts biological surveys for the conservation and rehabilitation of endangered species resources.
Assists in planning multifaceted fish and wildlife studies by contributing ideas, determining research methods, establishing practical procedures for accomplishing and reporting the work, and determining other needs, such as costs, equipment and personnel.
Conducts surveillance to detect colonization by aquatic species.
Assists in planning the operation of nuisance species control, stocking efforts, and working with cooperators to monitor aquatic species and any impacts on vulnerable native species.
Assists biologists in studying and preparing reports on monitoring and research projects for fish and/or other wildlife with emphasis on federally listed species.
Uses specialized techniques and methods to collect biological and water resources data from field investigations and reports findings to determine actual and potential impact on fishery and/or wildlife resources from water development projects, wetland restoration projects or habitat improvement projects.
Work includes locating, capturing, censusing, marking and tagging aquatic species.
Develops and uses automated databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected field data, using standard statistical methods in preparation of technical reports.
Enters and retrieves data from geographic information systems and/or other information management systems.
Operate a variety of field equipment commonly used in research studies, including, fish sampling
gear (such as fish traps and seins), specialized monitoring equipment, cars and trucks, and cameras.

Qualifications for GS-0404 Biological Science Technician:

_GS-06: You must meet A, B or C below:_

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience must include: Assisting others in collecting biological data including vegetation and habitat data as well as assistance with conducting biological surveys and field investigations; assisting others with implementing habitat restoration techniques to wetland habitats for the benefit of various species, with emphasis on invertebrates and waterfowl; assisting others with the manipulation of water levels within wetland units through a water control system (ditches, canals, drains, dikes, and water control structures) to implement moist soil unit prescriptions; assisting others with conducting invasive species removal efforts.
B. Possess at least 9 semester hours of graduate education directly related to the work of the position.
C. Possess a combination of qualifying specialized experience and education.

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience must include: Independently collecting biological data including vegetation and habitat data, as well as experience conducting biological surveys and field investigations; implementing habitat restoration techniques to wetland habitats for the benefit of various species, with emphasis on invertebrates and waterfowl; manipulating water levels within wetland units through a water control system (ditches, canals, drains, dikes, and water control structures) to implement moist soil unit prescriptions; and independently conducting invasive species removal efforts.
B. Possess at least 18 semester hours of graduate education directly related to the work of the position.
C. Possess a combination of qualifying specialized experience and education.

_Physical Demands and Work Environment:_
The work requires physical exertion such as regular and recurring walking or climbing over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending; crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching to observe, collect, or record field data.
May require carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Works indoors and out. Exposure to adverse weather conditions or weather extremes such as cold, dampness, humidity and insects are often encountered in the performance of the outdoor work.
Safety precautions and protective clothing or gear are required when working around water, and with chemicals and equipment.

5. Ability to communicate orally in order to present biological field data in reports.
6. Ability to work effectively with others.
7. Skill in leading biological technicians and/or volunteers in performing work in a variety of field situations
8. Skill in using a computer to input, edit, retrieve, and process scientific data.
