Summary
The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) is seeking a summer research fellow to carry out research in electrical power systems modeling and simulation. In this role, the researcher will design, build, test and deploy models of emerging power systems technology with an emphasis on distributed generation, renewables, microgrid regulation and switching schemes, and solid state power electronics. Results are intended to produce actionable information for utility engineers and management in the areas of engineering and cost benefit analysis. These modeling efforts will be released to nine hundred affiliated utilities alongside existing efforts via the Open Modeling Framework, a software effort led by NRECA and developed in partnership with the Department of Energy, the National Labs, software vendors, and utilities. Researchers will also participate in the publication activities of CRN.

Learn about the cooperative model and co-op community.
Contribute code to an open source modeling system in production.
Perform original research on smart grid cost-benefit analysis.
Projects
Work on mathematical models of smart grid technology.
Advance the state of the art in electrical distribution modeling to provide actionable intelligence to our non-profit cooperative members.
Design, build, test and deploy code that will be part of our web-based modeling framework.
This is an intern position.

Requirements and Qualifications
Pursuing or completed a Masters or PhD in Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science with an emphasis on modeling and simulation. Undergraduates with demonstrated research experience and results (publications) could also be strong candidates.
Demonstrated ability in modeling and simulation, preferably with an emphasis on power systems.
Experience shipping original software or contributing to a large code base (100 to 1,000 kLOC).
Pursuing or have obtained a degree in a technical field. Preferably computer science or applied math.
Some experience writing a couple thousand lines of code that you''re proud of: a web service, a mobile app, code for a scientific application, etc.
Python experience. Less preferably: Ruby, Java or other modern interpreted programming language experience.
HTML and Javascript experience.
