The Department Manager I is responsible for the overall operations of a specific laboratory area. These responsibilities include but are not limited to meeting client satisfaction goals, managing the human resources within the department, and ensuring health and safety and quality assurance plan compliance. Serves as a technical resource to department employees, as well as Project Managers, sales personnel, and clients. Make recommendations to laboratory management in regard to process improvements.
### Job Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Implements IT and ITAS health, safety, quality assurance, and compliance principle with the team, serves as a resource for analysts and technicians questions on these issues.
2. Develops and monitors group analysis schedules based on current and projected workloads and staffing.
3. Ensures that the laboratory group members maintain effective communications in order to eliminate unnecessary project costs and scheduling delays.
4. Supervises analyses on potentially hazardous samples.
5. Reviews and interprets results from samples analyzed.
6. With the QC Coordinator, determines acceptable corrective actions for the nonconformance occurring within his/her group.
7. Develops and reviews standard operating procedures for the group, as needed, to address new or revised analytical methods.
8. Acts as problem solver for unique technical situations, making recommendations on data acceptability.
9. Sets standards for and monitors productivity within the group
10. Responsible for controlling costs within the group.
11. Responsible for maintenance of inventory within his/her group.
12. Fulfills supervisory duties and responsibilities as attached.
Secondary Duties
1. Plans and establishes' subordinates' work assignments, priorities and
schedules.
2. Specifies procedures, methods, instruments and equipment to be employed.
3. Interprets company, divisional and laboratory policies and procedures to
subordinates.
4. Trains subordinates on work procedures.
5. Monitors subordinates' work daily to ensure both satisfactory productivity as
well as compliance, which he/she is responsible.
6. Uses statistical process control methods to measure and evaluate
performance and processes for which he/she is responsible.
7. Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists work in solving problems.
8. Conducts monthly progress reviews with direct reports evaluating required
performance (specified in their job descriptions) to actual job performance.
9. Positively reinforce subordinates performance that meets or exceeds
standards.
10. Improves subordinates current performance when necessary through a
process of frequent coaching and follow up.
11. Conducts subordinate annual formal performance evaluations and
recommends compensation actions.
12. Participates in subordinates career planning process and initiates actions
leading to their professional development (targeted training, temporary job
assignments, etc.)
13. Interviews and evaluates candidates for job openings within area of responsibility.
14. Recommends or initiates personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, bonus distribution, disciplinary measures or termination actions.
15. Initiates improvements to procedures process, work methods, equipment performance and quality of service.

### Job Requirements
Education:
BS degree in physical science (preferably chemistry)

Experience:
Minimum of 8 years analytical chemistry experience or equivalent training experience with 2 years as supervisor
