A Day in the Life of a Meter Reader at Westar Energy

_Meter Readers_
Westar Energy is an electric utility serving approximately 685,000 customers in Kansas. We are currently seeking qualified candidates for one Meter Reader position in Topeka, Kansas, wage rate $15.43. Hours will be Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm plus additional hours as required.
_Meter Readers_ - Meter Readers shall be qualified through knowledge, experience, training, and physical ability to read gas and electric meters, operate the ITRON system, check for theft and diversion, and recognize signs of gas leakage and work collections.
Read electric and gas consumption meters and enter data in hand-held computers.
Walk or drive vehicles along established routes to take readings of meter dials.
Download the assigned routes by docking the hand held to a docking station.
Upload on to docking stations all information collected on hand-held computers during meter rounds to offices so that data can be compiled.
Verify readings in cases where consumption appears to be abnormal, and record possible reasons for fluctuations via trouble messages and trouble codes in the hand held.
Inspect meters for unauthorized connections, defects, gas leaks, and damage such as broken seals.
Update and maintain pertinent information and coding such as client addresses and meter locations, to the accounts via the handheld.
Report to service departments any problems such as meter irregularities, damaged or compromised equipment, or impediments to meter access, including dogs and problematic customers.
Answer customers'' questions about service and direct them to customer care centers.
Leave messages (i.e., door tags) to make arrangements (e.g., different times to read meters, contain dog) in cases in which meters are not accessible.
Identify the potential hazards and wear and use the proper PPE.
Collects past due accounts when customers are in arrears and records it in an in-truck terminal using mobile data software.
Completes successions and other types of orders in the in-truck terminals using mobile data software.
Guide and assist others (e.g., engineers, out of town linemen crews) when inclement weather occurs.
Complete surveys (e.g., commercial, residential, device use) in order to keep databases updated.

The successful applicant is subject to work in all types of weather conditions and must possess a valid driver's license. A company vehicle is not provided for meter readers, as such, the successful applicant must have access to a reliable vehicle.
Selected applicants will be required to pass a background check, will be required to pass a drug screen and will be required to pass qualification testing.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
