Summary
Cultivates and maintains effective relationships with CEO's, staff, and directors of the electric cooperative community by demonstrating knowledge of, and expertise in the business of Rural Electric Cooperatives. Acts as a business advisor to the NRECA CEO, providing insight into cooperative business practices and strategic challenges. Effectively stewards the best interests of these stakeholders in guiding and developing NRECA services.
Responsible for the development, marketing, management, and viability of NRECA consulting services, products, and publications. Responsible for the profit and loss performance of assigned consulting practice area including recommendations for staffing, budgeting and other business changes to respond to the changing business environment.
Responsible for business development including the development of proposals and the management of key client relationships, and for meeting annual goals for assigned practice area.
Purpose and Mission
1. Develops and maintains effective relationships with member CEO's, staff and directors by demonstrating knowledge of, and expertise in the business of Electric Cooperatives. Assists member systems in identifying and implementing sound business practices. Offers a full range of advisory and consulting services to meet individual member system needs. (Including, but limited to Strategic Planning, Board Governance, Organizational Assessments, Customer Service Business Practice Audits, Business and Marketing Planning, Technology Planning, Disaster Recovery Planning, Best Practices and Process Redesign, Mergers/Consolidations, Demand Side Management, Performance Management Systems, Compensation Surveys, Analysis and Design, and Competitive Benefits Study and Design.) Responsibilities to include:
a) Manages business development, proposal generation and the maintenance of key client relationships. Directs the development, enhancement and evaluation of all consulting activities. Oversees assignments in practice area to ensure that deliveries represent the highest possible quality and that the assignments are completed within the agreed upon budget. Responsible for growing the practice and business volume.
b) Locates, assesses, recommends and manages outside professional resources (consultants) for NRECA members, which will complement NRECA products and delivery mechanisms and ensures that providers of services to member systems are fully qualified and understand the importance of the cooperative business model. Develops a high quality network of consultants/contractors and superior service delivery processes to make the service unique in the marketplace.
c) Selects, trains and monitors performance of the staff and/or business associates delivering services. Trains staff and/or business associates in appropriate methodologies and techniques, including needs and expectations of key audiences. Evaluates competencies and recommends development as appropriate.
2. Acts as a key resource in designing and conducting education, training and conference programs, including subject matter and target audience expertise. Delivers education and training programs targeted at directors, CEO's and senior staff.
3. Provides member system CEOs with a direct interface to NRECA's CEO and upper management. Acts as a liaison between member systems and NRECA staff to resolve problems and concerns. Champions NRECA products and services whenever possible and where appropriate. Provides feedback to NRECA CEO concerning member needs, competition and electric cooperative activity.
Special focus to be placed on:
a) At risk systems,
b) Systems with new CEO's who lack a solid understanding of the cooperative business model, and
c) Member systems that have expressed dissatisfaction with NRECA and question the value of membership.
4. Participate in Association Meetings and Conferences. Provide subject matter expertise and/or be a speaker or forum leader. Keep abreast of critical issues facing NRECA and our members (not just those in your functional area). Actively engage in Strategic Planning task groups as requested. Volunteer for committees and taskforces that strengthen internal relationships and build credibility for you and the NCG team.
5. Develops annual budgets and work plans for areas of responsibility and monitors costs and revenues on a continuous basis. Provide financial analysis of projects, quarterly pipeline reports and monthly budget reviews. Create annual business plans for assigned practice area to include revenue projections. Priority should be given to projects that align with NRECA goals and member resolutions.
Requirements and Qualifications
Master''s or Advanced Degree
At least 15 years progressively responsible experience in the utility industry, cooperative experience desirable. Comprehensive understanding of utility business functions and best practices.
At least 10 years progressive experience in the design and delivery of management consulting and business advisory services.
Training design and delivery experience and executive relationship management experience a plus.
Knowledge of corporate governance, RUS Accounting, Internal Controls, Auditing Standards, and Enterprise Risk Management
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Executives and Boards
Able to think strategically and act tactically
