Monitoring Engineer
Reports to: Manager of Enterprise Monitoring
Description:
Responsible for building and automating monitoring and performance management of all production environments (servers, network equipment, databases and proprietary software applications). Monitoring Engineer responds proactively to all fault & performance events & alerts. The focus will primarily be around automating self-healing events, instrumenting our proprietary applications for leading indicators of issues, and delivering the alerts to our Asurion Technology Operations Center (ATOC). The Monitoring Engineer instruments application stacks from the desktop to the load balancers, to the application servers, to middle-tier servers such as .NET with embedded SQL, and SQL Server. In addition, they determine performance thresholds, key performance indicators, application event correlation, and raise meaningful alerts.
Responsibilities:
Serve as technical advisor to the Asurion Technology Operations Center ATOC
Develop, implement, document ATOC policies and procedures
Guide the ATOC Levels 1, 2 and 3 escalation teams with issues arising from in and outside the company
Proactively drive support issues to resolution, applying lessons learned, and not repeating the same mistakes
Establish vision of monitoring and alerting platform, promoting that vision to executive leadership
Achieve ATOC team performance metrics and the service and availability levels
Train others in developing monitoring, alerting, and run books
Exceed Quarterly Infrastructure Availability Goals for all products
Exceed Monthly Response & Resolution Goals by priority
Requirements:
B.S. in Computer Science or Engineering discipline
Familiarity with Windows Sever 2003/2008, and MS SQL 2005/2008 troubleshooting
Basic knowledge of RedHat Enterprise Linux AS and ES
Ability to be hands-on with technology and lead in problem analysis and resolution
A desire to mentor and share knowledge with colleagues
Comfortable working in fast-changing environment where resources are optimized around producing measurable results
Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
Willing to provide 24/7 support
Ability to work with globally located teams
Strong priority and time management skills
Adept at multitasking, comfortable with changing priorities
Strong sense of urgency with a can-do attitude
