The following job description describes the criteria for the role of Senior System Administrator. The Senior System Administrator performs installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating system workstations and servers in support of technical and programmatic processing requirements. The Senior System Administrator performs software installations and upgrades to operating systems and software packages, schedules installations, upgrades, and maintenance in accordance with established IT policies/procedures. The Senior System Administrator ensures data recoverability by regular system backups and database archive operations, including offsite storage and retrieval
services
. Conducts routine hardware and software audits of workstations/servers to ensure compliance with standards, configuration guidelines, and IT security policies. The Senior System Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day tasks to keep large-scale resources available for the user
community
. He/she will investigate any reported issues and resolve them to the user and customer's satisfaction in a timely manner. He/she will be responsible for managing assigned resources to identify potential hardware faults early and quickly respond when issues do arise. The Senior System Administrator will ensure proper monitoring of the system, implement automated techniques where appropriate, perform system analysis, monitor job performance, and capture required metrics. He/she will be responsible for keeping all system documentation up-to-date, and ensure the systems are in a state to always be prepared for internal and security audits. The Senior Systems Administrator will interface with both the customer and program management and technical staff to ensure a complete and accurate understanding of all data center requirements and ongoing actions. The Senior System Administrator will have the ability to investigate, stay abreast of and utilize new and emerging RRC technologies as they relate to the customer environment and goals is desired for this position. Required Skills: 6 plus years demonstrated skill developing and implementing innovative and forward-looking strategies for a large scale RRC computer systems technology refresh and expansion project. Demonstrated experience in leading complex technical projects that encompass large-scale systems evaluation, development, integration and deployment. Experience with benchmarking, performance optimization of large-scale computer systems, experience with high availability, fault tolerance of large-scale computer systems, and experience developing metrics and test plans for evaluating and reporting on RRC related technologies. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Experience with large-scale high-capacity and capability planning. Desired Skills: Experience with one or more high-performance systems to include IBM Power architectures (e.g., p6), Cray (e.g., XT5), and SGI (e.g., Altix). Proficient in installation, configuration and maintenance of multiple Operating Systems (e.g., RHEL, SLES, CLE, AIX). Proficient in developing scripts for automating processes using csh, bash, ksh, perl, tcl/tk and other scripting languages. Experience implementing strong security models for infrastructure protection Experience with virtualization technologies such as Xen or VMWare. Experience tuning HPC systems to achieve optimal levels of performance and availability. Experience with x86-based clusters from Appro, Cray, SGI or IBM. Experience with many-core technologies such as nVidia GPGPUs. Experience with storage archives from DDN, Panasas and Oracle. Understanding of facilities requirements and issues that accompany operations at an RRC Center.
